Phil studied Viticulture and Enology at UC Davis from 1997 to 2002, including a year studying at Grenoble University in France,  learning the language and widening his appreciation of French wine appellations. During university, he worked as an intern at both Schramsberg and Terra Valentine in the Napa Valley. After graduating in 2002, Phil returned to France where he worked as an intern at two domain in Burgundy owned by Boisset. During the thick of harvest he was part of a team at Domaine de la Vougeraie in Premeaux where  wine was produced from thirty-three different vineyards from Musigny and Bonne Mares to premier cru and village wines. Thanks to his French language skills Phil was chosen to oversee the cellar activities at Domaine Raymond Launay in Pommard along with one other full time cellar master. There he contributed to many Pommard wines as well as several grand crus. Phil returned to Northern California having learnt ‘French Cellar’ methods and techniques to best showcase ‘terroir’. He joined Phil Senior making Phillipe-Lorraine wines and soon after they established the BAXTER label together focusing on single vineyard wines and old-world techniques. Phillip Baxter has been winemaker for BAXTER since 2002 and also acts as consultant winemaker for other wine brands.

Phil is native to California, growing up in the central valley where he studied winemaking at Fresno State.  He moved to the Napa Valley just before 1969 when he started his career under the tutelage of Bill Bonetti at Charles Krug Winery.  Phil oversaw development of the Souverain Napa operation and was the head winemaker at Rutherford Hill Winery for the first ten years.  He then became head winemaker for Domaine-Michel in the Dry Creek Valley.  In 1989 Phil created his own business with the Philippe-Lorraine label in honor of his maternal grandparents, Philippe and Lorraine Segrais.  Direct descendants from France, but more recently from the Isle of Mauritius, they were the source of much of his love of wine and the old world.  During the last fifteen years, Phil has also served as consultant to many of Napa Valley’s finest wineries including Mario Perelli-Minetti, Fife Napa, and Terra Valentine on Spring Mountain.  Now, together with his youngest son, he focuses most of his energy on Philippe-Lorraine and Baxter, their single vineyard label.
